Hello, PEFCU Members.
Protecting your account is our top priority at PEFCU. We’re constantly on the lookout for fraud and scams that may compromise your account, but remember, this is a team effort. We need you to help us keep your account safe by staying alert and reporting activity that just doesn’t feel right to you.
Please be aware of these recent fraud trends seen across the financial industry:
Verifying Fraudulent Transactions
Fraudsters are impersonating credit union personnel to convince members to validate fraudulent transactions as being legitimate. PEFCU would NEVER ask you to authorize a fraudulent charge. Use the Lock Card feature in online or mobile banking if you see a suspicious charge and contact PEFCU as soon as possible.
Fake Payday Loan Sites
There are fake payday loan sites that promise a loan just to gather your information. Make sure you search and check the BBB.org website or your state’s official business directory to confirm it’s a legitimate business before entering your information. If you suspect that you’ve given your information to a fake payday loan site, please contact PEFCU as soon as possible.
Targeting the Elderly
Fraudsters are posing as trusted parties (e.g., government agencies, financial institutions, family members) to convince the elderly to secretly wire funds without telling anyone. Look out for the seniors in your life! A good rule is for seniors to add a trusted contact to their account and set alerts for amounts above a certain threshold so they can be discussed.
Password Requests
Fraudsters are posing as credit union personnel and asking for members’ usernames and passwords. PEFCU would never contact you to ask for your login credentials. Never give your online or mobile banking password to anyone.
Cash App Transactions
Scammers have been asking members to initiate a Cash App transaction to move funds from their bank account to an outside account to protect the funds from fraud. PEFCU would never tell you to move funds outside of our credit union to safeguard against fraud.
